What does it cost to participate?
Are you kidding? There is no cost to participate. Actually, there is a cost for a required background check, but we'll take care of that expense. We are just happy to have you.
What if I can't make it every week?
No problem; we understand. Life happens and things come up. If you can't make it for whatever reason, just give the school coordinator a call to let them know so they can inform your Reading Buddy.
May I help more than one child?
Absolutely! We'd love for you to help two or three children. We don't want any student not to have a Reading Buddy, but it sometimes happens. The more volunteers that we have, the more children we can serve. If you've got the time to help more than one child, please do!
Is the program effective?
It is! Using a diagnostic test (STAR Literacy Assessment) designed to measure reading proficiency at early grade levels, assessment results reported an impressive 95.5% of students paired with a Reading Buddies mentor showed literacy skill improvement from August 2022-May 2023.
What day am I expected to come?
We realize that schedules can vary. We are happy to have you whatever day you can make work. Our friendly coordinators, teachers, and principals look forward to working with you to determine a schedule that works for everyone.
